Kuala Lumpur, 1 November 2021 – The rites of passage into adulthood is an exhilarating stage of life but for many young adults, taking on new responsibilities and gaining financial independence can be overwhelming. Add in today’s soft global economic landscape, many young adults find ‘adulting’ to be hard.  

It does not make matters easier when Malaysian young adults are transitioning into adulthood at a time when the nation seeks to rebuild the economy after the COVID-19 pandemic. While young adults aged between 15-39 years constitute 45% of the population, many are struggling to find a job in today’s soft job market. As at August 2021, youth unemployment rates hit 8.8% against the overall unemployment rate of 4.6%[1].

This raises a concerning issue: a large percentage of Malaysian young adults do not have enough savings or insurance protection, and they are vulnerable to financial impact following an unfortunate event.

To spread the message on how insurance can help young adults gain a strong foothold into adulthood, Gibraltar BSN launched the “Welcome to Adulthood” brand campaign, comprising two videos titled “Jasa” and “Independence” as well as a lucky draw contest.

The highly impactful short videos show how two young adults took their first step towards achieving financial independence and ‘adulting’ by purchasing simple and affordable insurance via the life insurer’s e-Commerce platform, i2u (

Gibraltar BSN’s Chief Executive Officer Lee Kok Wah said, “For many of us, the purchase of our first insurance policy was proof that we have truly become adults. But our younger generation is now having a rough time transitioning into adulthood in this challenging economic landscape. We hope that these two videos will spark the conversation about insurance among the youths and how we can help them confidently face their future with affordable and relevant protection from as low as RM7.60 per month.”
